A round up of past matches and 20/20s!

Royal Marsden, David Adam’s Appeal Event v SCC

20120613-225516.jpg
Comrades one and all! This will not be a blow by lowaccount of the matches played on this glorious day, more a general round up of the good feeling and fun we all had.. I say weall had, but there was only five of us and we were meant to be at least seven. Very hard to drum up support for a mid week, pay go event. But it was for charity, comrades and we had so much cricket. Next year, support it more, please!

20120613-225546.jpg
There were four teams and we each played four games, once each, top two and bottom two. I shall be straight up and say that we kissed each game. No recriminations but they were all quite good and we lost a couple of golden opportunities. Our team was Oli, Rob, Phil, brother Tim, Andrew and then two helpers from the minuscule celebryea team: John Altman (of eastenders fame!) and Glynn. The latter was an excellent all rounder and especially with the bat.

20120613-225602.jpg
All games were split between a delicious lunch and tea and played beneath a screaming hot sun, the hottest day we had had this year until then. Very rosy we were, especially when awarded the singing Peppa Pig for last place. And comrades, the bloody pig is our mascot until we win a game. From which event we take the pig and a bottle of bubbles into the field and successively bat the flaming thing into the rough. Then set light to it, drink champagne and send its battered body into the bushes.

I shall upload the scorecards but I am not in a rush as it does not really count as a proper game but a fun league day where we played for charity. Great day though, comrades. Lots of cricket and lots of fun. Next year, eh?

Match Report: PSCC v SCC 19th May 2012

Squirrel pub

Comrades, we thank you and stand saluting the brave that mustered themselves for our opening game of the 2012 season. And what a game it was, with all of the ups and downs and drops and boundaries that make an SCC game worthy of the name. But in particular, the comradely atmosphere won out and helped us feel glorious in the face of defeat.

Penn Street CC play on the main ground opposite the squirrel and it was in that establishment we took lunch and an opening pint. Before us lay the field of battle and captains tossed resulting in PSCC batting first. It was timed game with tea at 16:15 and then 20 overs at 18:30.

Opening bowler of Yuri and brother, Chipmonkski produced a wicket (thank you!) and 55 runs. Not too bad but I feel some missed lbws! The wicket was S.BOYLE, bowling Yuri and a MAGNIFICENT slip catch by Cobramski (Top job, Cobra!)

New bowlers of Cobramski and Buster Marx came in. At this point, our fielding flaws were amply illustrated by many dropped catches. Cobramski serves up a tempting whack and in the right field, we would have taken several wickets with catches from his illusssssssssssive style. As captain Marx said in a post match interview:

“It was a really good game and if we’d taken out catches I think we’d have won, especially if you consider that their main bat was dropped twice early in his innings. I think we should go for timed games for the time being.”

Words of great wisdom comrades! Cobramski’s session ended at six overs for a score that is not required to advertise – if we bolted on the three wickets we could have caught, it would negate all scale! So who to replace? Samavoy – “I can’t bowl today” – KanKan. Well he certainly could bowl despite his injury. In fact, over his bowling he took the wickets of R.Slade and P.Goodchild with  Sutherland out behind – top Wicket keeping, Markx! Soldya Grannma had a short spell and for that, managed a good wicket, stump out, of J.Slade. A happy Soldya went home that night.

Andropov to collect

So in the field, we counted at least twelve dropped catches. We shall work on this comrades. But some good bowling and all was not lost.

Batting brought us out onto the field feeling… special. Not down-hearted as the day was too set fare for that. But perhaps a little daunted at there score of 243 for 7 (score card is wrong). Special mention by the way to C.Fletcher of PSCC who declared at 163.

Cobramski and Brandonov opened the batting. Stay in and solid was the orders (timed game!) and both had heads down. Cobramski took 24 balls and Brandonov, 39. Both produced a total of 7 runs – This is what we call solid defiance, and comrades, Yuri salutes you. This hopefully set in the minds of the opposition that we were here to stay. Cobramski was bowled by Goodchild and no sooner had Antonov Dickster walked out than he walked back. No comment, Tony!

Markx ambled out. The solid defensive wall that is our captain held true. Check this out, comrades: Before being bowled out Lofty, he took 23 runs off 78 balls. We must learn more brick wallness in these situations and watch Markx’s style. Captain, we salute you!

Other batting results: Markx-B (Buster) 23, caught and bowled – a good knock and thank you, comrade! Soldya, caught Fletcher for 12 but by ‘eck – i feel double that before the summer is set in! Chipmonkski, a defiant 1 off 11 balls but great defence of the wicket and partnering. Ilyeva – 2 off 15 balls – utter defiance comrade commissar treasurer!

Yuri loses chin
Yuri loses chin

Andropov Sewelski and Yuri now come together to fend off thirty plus balls for the draw. We tried comrades, and came within less than a dozen to pull it off. Andropov taking 9 off 16 balls and Yuri finally caught by Herriot at 6 runs off 24 balls.

Close comrades! Very close. This season we shall take a draw and who knows….

Semper Sodales, Fors et Victores!

Yuri

Match Report – NFTS v SCC: 17th Sept 2011

Beautiful Penn St.

NFTS victory 226-3 :  SCC all out for 80

Comrades, i am just out of the bath. It was hot and soothing and has helped to return my poor aching muscles to some kind of normal. What a day we had of it yesterday? It was a great one. We had all of the highs and lows of the game, we had injuries, we met new friends, we had pro scoring and a twelfth man. We had youth and seniority and laughs and high tension, rain and sun, wind and calm. We had a great day of cricket.

Scorers, Victoria and Pete

What a lovely little pitch is Hit or Miss, Penn Street? Sweet pavilion for both children and cricketers and a trim and beautiful green and wicket. Guy Hake and the SCC commissariat arranged this new and exciting fixture and upon arrival he was hard at work mowing, rolling and making fine the environs. We soon had our full team at the pavilion and PAWS were getting on like a raucous, garrulous and utterly chummy bunch. First big  thanks to Victoria Wood, Peter (her new bloke!) and Annabel Tarrant for coming along and scoring and adding support and assistance. The lovely Mrs. Yuri-P, Kate Richardson, the delightful Ms. Ilyeva, Margit Wettler and the well assembled and ultra-supportive family of comrade Antonov, Tony Dickie.

Andropov at Drop off

Captain Commissar, Marx-B (Mark Blackledge) entered the toss and we were fielding first. Opening bowlers being myself, Yuri-P and Robski Dabitoff. A valiant opening session was attempted and at least nobody wet themselves. However, within the space of the first hour, two of our cricket stalwarts were effectively stretchered off. Outfield comrade Andropov Slipswell, took a screaming tumble in reception of the ball, some say this was outside of an over, i feel there was a hole in the space time continuum through which the ball traversed. But slipped did Andropov and was soon hobbling back to the Pavilion. A devastating blow from which we had to recover. Luckily, PAWS Victoria Wood had brought along her new and brave  man, Pete (brave for playing cricket, not going out with Victoria!). So Peter became comrade Pete’ski out in the field. Then what?

Oh no, comrades. Fellow instigator of cricketing madness, comrade commissar treasurer, Ilyeva took a strange and beguiling slip in the dip to the West of the ground and was limping in. But he was not down-hearted and despite vigorous advice to sit down with his legs wide open and stop the ball with his crotch, he chose to be replaced by NFTS 12th man, Rob – Thank you Rob! Margit will be forever grateful that you saved Ilyeva’s crotch from a sure smashing. She likes to preserve these things for herself.

There was some sterling work in the field from the likes of Antonov, Soldya (Mad Hatter), Marx-Jnr (Buster) and before their falls, Ilyeva and Andropov! But let’s consider the bowling. Figures are figures but names to remember from the day are some outstanding results from Marx-Junior Buster’ski who produced 1 for 44 off 8 overs, Yuri-P gaining 1 off 25 for 7 overs, Hudski with many close wickets and only 22 runs off 7 overs AND not to mention some sterling work withe the ball by Cobramovich, Robski, Soldya and Chipmunkski of Sussex.

Marx-Bs Jnr and Snr.

A delicious tea seemed to take the edge off the grim fact that we were facing 226 for 3 in a timed match. It was looking like a chase for a draw and so we set off. Openers were Antonov and Cobramovich. I wish i could report well of the session but we were barely away before we had lost both. Was it the pitch? Was it the sun? Was it just cricket!? It was the latter. Cobra bowled cleanly, Antonov caught off Sharma. So father and son duet, Marx-B and Marx-Junior were together and Marx-B took a helpful 14 before being caught, Rowe. Hudksi came aboard and helped Marx-Junior to get 15 before the youthful Marx was removed caught, Singh.

Yuri-P was a twat and ran himself out for nothing. Indeed, I didn’t even face a ball.

Brotherly comrade Chipmunkski stole 2 runs before being bowled, court. But cut a fine figure in his blue cap. Soldya helped out with a stallion of 5 runs until LBW. And then into the frame strolled Robski Dixon. We had to go for a draw. We had no choice. There were well over ten overs remaining and it wasn’t going to be easy but Robski got his head down and was defending beautifully. Andropov Slipswell, despite doctor’s orders, took to the field, runner was Yuri-P. Andropov was after some pay-back for his ankle and hit out for a total of 6 runs until caught Court. This meant that as we had not 13th man, Yuri-P got a second bite of the cherry.

Reclining pros

So there we stood, Robski and Yuri-P. We had a total of ninety plus balls to survive to hold a draw. This would not be easy. But in true comradely style, Robski and Yuri-P got our heads down and defended and played tactical. Indeed, the partnership battled on to the pen-ultimate over, when after moving a fielder to the repeated destination, Robski was lured into a midfield catch by Goodwin and we were finished. BUT a great attempt.

That was the game and the game is all done. We had a great match and a great day and the tea was truly lovely. The pitch, venue and pub was bang on and we shall be back next year for a return match. Comrades… Always, victors occasionally (one day!!)

Yuri-P
