MATCH REPORT – 4th MAY 2014 SCC v LMSCC

Francov Cobramovich
Francov Cobramovich

40 overs, timed.
LMSCC win by 6 wickets.
SCC 98 all out

The sickening decadence of the leafy West London suburbs. Complacent, restrained wealth, without a hint of honest, hard-won Muscovite bling. Bird-tweety tree-lined streets. Faux classical bridges in a peaceful park. Happy young families untainted by grim service of the Motherland…Chis-Vick: You get the picture, nyet? The very non-Socialist setting for 2014’s first battle to crush colonialist capitalism at its only decent creation ever – apart from Ze Beatles – Crick-Et !

Yuri’s dog, the ludicrous, self-appointed ‘Lieutenant General’ Francov Cobramovich led the glorious Collective out to bat, accompanied by the Transylvanian classicist Vlad ‘Impaler’ Boringski. And how boring they indeed were, comrades! Nearly three-quarters of an hour spent Dorothying, dot-ing and generally pansying about with innumerable forward defensives and the like. Only the early season sunshine lifted the mood of your humble state scribe.

With the scoreboard on a turgid 27, Vladimir was himself impaled by none other than Altmanov, the latter bowling for LMS. But worry not comrades, the thespian National Treasure has not defected. Along with fellow gent Davidov Hannant of Brighton Xiles, Altmananov was most chivalrously guesting for the opposition, who had turned up under-strength.

Over the next 12 overs though, Vlad’s replacement, the towering Robski, rapidly accelerated the SCC score before his timbers were toppled. And soon after, blessed relief, so were Cobra’s, after an interminable 85 minutes out in the middle, largely spent posing in his White Russian helmet.

56-3 off 23; but with over an hour left to bat, seven wickets in hand, and some lusty, harvest-honed bladesmen to come, surely SCC could still notch a respectable score? However, the middle order – with the exception of big-hitting debutante Sametski Hodderin – had all evidently been too busy before their innings…flirting with the assembled summer-skirted, Soviet PAWS, to consider this most serious sporting question.

One by one, Communist batters four, five, seven and eight each fell for year Zero. I shall not waste Pravda’s typewriter ink naming and shaming the culprits here. Our coach, former Sri Lankan international ‘Keithy’ will doubtless ensure they are suitably punished, hopefully with the club side arm.

Only new star Hodderin, S. (22 runs, with a huge six over mid wicket amongst his four boundaries) and supreme Tzar Yuri (a well-judged 14 not out) salvaged some honour and fighting spirit amongst this mass desertion of duty on the battlefield: The Collective had scraped to 98 all out.  Stats fans (and Keithy…) will be fascinated to learn that eight of LMS’s ten wickets were achieved clean bowled. Chief executioner proved to be London Marshes’ devilishly nagging spinner Brawton, senior: This sadistic veteran took a nastily impressive 5-25 off 11 tortuous overs.

Bolstered by a thoroughly delightful French cuisine-inspired spoof of English tea – kind courtesy Madamoiselle Yankeroff – of rich cream scones, home-cooked sausage rolls and traditional sandwiches, spirits were extremely high as SCC took the field to defend a near indefensible total.

Reaching it was to prove no cakewalk for LMS: Mad Soldya Hatscape, Timov Chipmonski and Hitmanherski Yankerov all bowled economical short spells. Hodderin S. and Ilyeva Luncherov were revelations in the field, the latter in particular endlessly sprinting and diving to cover every centimetre of a Steppe-sized zonal fielding area.

Sametski’s brother and fellow debutante Danov Hodderin had boldly opened the bowling (with Yankerov), keeping LMS curtailed with fine figures of 5-0-18-1. Despite struggling with a virus, Vice Captain Brandonovski then made a tricky catch at backward square look nonchalantly easy. And Tzar Yuri topped the attack charts, with three fine wickets.

After 22.1 not entirely nerveless overs though, the Capitalists triumphed, but – such was our Socialistic performance with the ball – the six-wicket victory perhaps even slightly flattered the victors: Encouraging signs, comrades!

Now, anybody have Keithy’s e-mail address…?!?

Well comrades, that’s the kind of numbers we don’t see very often. Indeed, I think that maybe our highest score – time will tell as I delve into our records. Yes, I know we lost – I mean come on. We know our motto, we our know our ethos. To us it is the fun and the comradery and the hope of a win. Today we achieved all of those things and more and that makes me a happy Premier and I hope the SCC proud too?

The Count

We had a very different team in make up too. A big welcome goes out to The Count Oblonskaya – Owen Sewellski, Son of Andropov Sewellski and first time in the field for a whole match. Not an easy feat for a pre-teen – we salute you! (Admittedly his nickname is a mix of Tolstoy’s characters, but who’s complaining? You talking to me? Yeah, you… If Tolstoy has a problem he can roll in his grave! Incidentally, Tolstoy’s grave can be found here.

Chesham Bois were into bat first. Our Captain Marx gathered us up and in we went. Our field looked new and vital. Faces for the day and special guests Kelly Lunn and Jerry Canifyouneedoneski. Founder member Dil Dhillonoffsky was back amongst the fold and 2013 new blood, Tomsk (Tom Mayhew). Bowling opened with our usual bowlers of myself and Brother Chipmunkski. We withered away at them for 12 overs shared for 38 and 42 but Withams and Holloway were reluctant to be out. How annoying! With more yelling in the field and brotherly encouragement we pushed on to the new blood of Lunov and Twizzle (Tristanoff). This certainly was an increase in pace and the put masses of pressure on until Withams was caught for 61 off Lunov – who held it? I don’t know.

Big Stretch for Robski
Big Stretch for Robski

Great figures for Lunov with 18 off 8 with 1 wicket to boot. Twizzle not far ahead with 12 off 8 and 4 maidens – as if scoring runs is an illegal activity! Well done you two. Bowling then carried through to Dhillofski, Soldya and Tomsk – 23, 57 and 18 off 4,6 and 2 respectively. BUT a superb Golden duck wicket for Soldya on the last ball. Their wickets were retired: J.Holloway, 2 run outs for Beeson & Hazelhurst and of course, Golden Duck for L.Saunders.

A very hospitable Tea followed, very nice folk at Chesham it has to be said. I like the tactic of weighing down the wanderers with delicious cake – but in this instance, it backfires as we like to languish as the un-victorious anyway, so we achieve success AND eat cake!

As we slotted into bat, Dil and Marx strolled out. The latter amply supported by his most encouraging of sons, Twizzle. Dil solidly provided 25 until caught off Saunders (get used to that name). But Marx was defiant and was making a good exterior toilet facility impression, that made of bricks. He and Tomsk were now plying their trade. Lovely to see Tomsk amongst us, in particular his fast swivelling stroke.

At 6pm, Marx was strolling back, caught off Saunders. His score 27. Our praise for his dots may earn a new Dorothy award – we shall see. Robski was now with Tomsk but unfortunately briefly – shame as we love the Robski drive (caught off Saunders – aha! Getting the pattern?) Twizzle next for an 8 minute knock before being Run-Out – Saunders. The guest Lunov to join Tomsk. Good bowling from this comrade and batting too. As Tomsk left (A delicious 44, thank you!) – Lunov and Soldya were present.  The former finally departed by L.Saunders (different!) for a very useful 33 and now The Count. Young Sewellski  strolled to the crease with admirable determination and grit – all the pain of a classic Andropov Stop now going from his memory, he was ready to bat. And a fine beginning to his career he had. In total facing 12 balls and scoring his first ever run. Well done Comrade!

Yuri for a change - in bat!
Yuri for a change – in bat!

Chipmunkski and Yuri came up the rear but despite the former adding 23 to the total before being bowled P.Withams, we had not achieved our goal by 29 runs. But a high score for us and as i review the stats soon, you can all see for yourselves. Big thanks to our hosts of course who are very welcoming and have a nice pitch for us to play on. Many thanks to the all of those were in our team and especially congratulations and welcome to The Count, Owen Sewellski.

It’s a lovely little fixture that nods goodnight to the season and leaves us all with a feeling of joy with a tinge of sadness. But the greeting is very warm and the pitch very sweet, so we shall hopefully be back next year.

Do Svidaniya!

Match Abandoned due to Rain.

Well, this is very sad and the first time I have had to blog about an abandoned match. Still, I guess as the years pass I will have to blog on a variety of match adventures and as this is the first in a few seasons, I guess I can’t complain.

What a pity though as some elements of this match were quite unique and coming off the back of the match in St James’ versus Brighton Xiles it was going to form our first tour – Albeit a tour of two! Can it count? Half a match?

It rained for ten minutes in the morning. It rained heavily. But then the sun appeared and right through to the mid afternoon the weather was not bad. Last year we had similar and were out there in thunder and lightening but it was drier. In this match we got no thunder but we got the rain. So what can I say? Well, comrade commissar Jontin was given his first captaincy of the SCC and we were all curious to see how his handling of his comrades would turn out. Before we walked out to field first, he said he would be “tough but loving”. He was “going for a victory for the SCC”. Brave man, I thought. How many other captains have had such lofty ambitions for our band of comrades!

I don’t want to natter too much about fielding figures that cannot be used for stats but I want to thank the Lindfield players that helped us out on numbers. Especially as they faced some superb sledging from their normal team-mates. Normal? Perhaps I should say regular! So big “thank yous” to Andrew Osborne and Chris Wincott.

We broke for tea after a very late end of innings. We must speed up around the field I think! Gorgeous tea prepared by comrade Chipmunkski and his most excellent partner, Clare! Thank you both. May I just add that I was responsible for the chopping of the boiled eggs for the mayo sandwiches? Quite special. Quite extra special. And as we ate The Feast of Chomestocles the rain fell down outside. It didn’t stop for a goodly amount of time. And after some probing and head rubbing by the grounds man and team – the match was abandoned.

For your amusement alone I have attached the fielding figures below – why not? I also posted the rather charming picture of comrades Brandonovski, Robski and Ilyeva. All seduced by the pink side and thrusting their bulbous colours into your faces. How delightful!

Ever forwards, comrades!
